Automotive majors seem to be ushering in new technologies by the dozen. In fact, one wonders if they are competing with each other in upgrading their tech systems. Ford has been at the forefront in doing so and now they have brought in mobile WiFi hot spot in their Ford Focus planned for 2012. Ford’s primary plan is to experiment the system only in Europe. When that happens, it would make the Focus a mobile WiFi hotspot.

Ford Sync, a novel system to be featured in a few Ford car models,  is a communication and entertainment system which can be used for hands free voice calling. It will help in running applications developed by the company and Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive Operating System in the vehicle. The WiFi system will utilize customers’ existing USB modems or smartphones integrated by a Myford touch system with the Ford sync.

The company claims that the technology will be capable to provide password protected connections to a maximum of 5 gadgets supporting WiFi  - which can be smart phones, tablets or notebooks. No additional paper work will be required for this as the service provider will take advantage of the users’ current data plan. The spokesperson for Ford, Christof Kellerwessel, has been quoted as saying:

“We’re finding that Ford customers are tech savvy and – while traveling as passengers in cars – they want to be able to use their Wi-Fi enabled devices. A reliable in-car Internet connection is therefore extremely important to them, and that’s exactly what Sync will offer when it makes its European debut on the Ford Focus in 2012.”

The sync employed will be receptive to future upgrades too. Ford will decide on this system’s propagation to other models depending of the success of the Ford Focus 2012. This will sure be a smart addition to the four-wheeler which will be followed by other automakers.
