Last season, Mumbai won the Ranji Trophy though they did so only with just two comfortable victories in 11 games. Though the team struggled for a better part of the tournament, they looked more than comfortable once they made it to the semis stage.
For the new season, the defending champions could face their most challenging tournament to date as the reports last came in on October 26, 2013.

With Agarkar retiring and Ramesh Powar leaving the side to play for Rajasthan, the team’s bowling lineup looks a lot less threatening for side. With only Wasim Jaffer left from the old bowling lineup, the team should have to make do with the services of the likes of Vishal Dabholkar and Iqbal Abdulla the two left-arm spinners neither of whom have much experience in Ranji Trophy. However, the team’s morale would receive a much needed boost from the presence of the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma, Zaheer Khan, and Sachin Tendulkar at least in the group stages to get the momentum going.
Abhishek Nayar has also shown a lot of promise with the ball as well as with the bat. The Mumbai vice-captain is expected to lead the team from the front when Zaheer, Sharma and Rahane leave the team to meet national commitments.
The team line up for the group games would announced at a later stage though having big names in the squad for group games and then not having their services to rely on in the knock out stage could prove to be a gamble for Mumbai.
