The Tamil movie “Thalaivaa” starring Vijay an Amala Paul was released in Karnataka and other states of India on August 9, 2013.
The movie was directed by A L Vijay and G V Prakash directed the music. The movie was dubbed into telugu language and was released as “Anna – Born to Lead”.
The movie was not released in Tamilnadu its home state for some offensive dialogues regarding the state government in the movie.
Reportedly, the movie did very well at the Bangalore box-office despite facing tough competition from other releases like “Chennai Express”.
Trade analyst and film critic Taran Adarsh tweeted, #Thalaivaa has taken a super start in UK. Thu previews till Sat total: £ 82,506 [Rs 77.88 lacs]. Excellent!”.
The first half of the movie is packed with some good comedy and the biggest letdown is its dragged narration that never wants to end.
Since the movie was not released in Tamil Nadu, Vijay fans had to go to other States like Karnataka to watch the movie.
The movie was released in more than 26 screens in Bangalore alone.
The controversy regarding the movie is said to be the story which resembles the story of SS Kandaswamy and his son SK Ramaswamy, the social workers from Mumbai who saved Tamil youths from becoming anti-social elements.
The movie is said to showing the these people as underworld dons. While their childrens claimed that none of their parents were involved in underworld activities, movie theatre owners in Chennai and other parts of Tamilnadu received letters threatening that the theatres would be bombed if they screen “Thalaivaa”.
So theatre owners from Chennai and Chenagalpet stopped the advance booking and di not to release the movie.
The Tamilnadu Theatre Owners Association has sought the government help in releasing the movie.
Actor Vijay also clarified that “Thalaivaa” is not related to politics or any person, it is a family entertainer with comedy, romance and action.
The Moviecrow.com gave rating of 2.5 out of 5 stars and descrbed it as, “Watch Thalaivaa only for its breezy first half.” EntertainmentOneIndia gave the movie a 3 out of 5 stars.
