Australia have many worries going into the third Test. One, they are on the verge of conceding the Ashes yet again, their four defeat in five Ashes series. Even a draw will suffice for England to take home the urn.
Secondly, more than the Ashes loss, it’s the defeat in the Test match itself that will be a problem for Australia. They are 2-0 down and it barely looks likely that they will draw the game, let alone win it, given the way they have played so far.
Thirdly, they do not have the players to script the turnaround. Batting continues to trouble the side but there exists no-one in the shed who can take up the mantle and try and forge partnerships with others.
And then they have lost James Pattinson to injury. With the spinners not coming into their own as it is, it will be down to Ryan Harris and Peter Siddle to mount the challenge.
England are far better placed than this, in that the only injury concern for them is Kevin Pietersen. And even if it comes to him missing out, the fact of the matter is he did not have a great Lord’s Test and the hosts still won comfortably.
