The Blade Runner has run into trouble, that too on Valentine’s Day. South African Olympic and Paralympic track star Oscar Pistorius, better known as Blade Runner, was arrested after he allegedly shot his girlfriend dead. Reeva Steenkamp, a former FHM model, reported to have been dating him for a year, was found dead at his home in Pretoria on around 4 am.

Pistorius, the sports icon of South Africa, was the first double amputee who participated in the London Olympics 2012. Though he couldn’t make the finals, Pistorius managed to reach the 400 meters semi-finals.
After a long history of victories, he suffered a loss in the 200 meters in last year’s Olympics. He questioned the legitimacy of the winner’s prosthetic blades after the race which had led to controversies and he had to express his regret soon after.
In South Africa, police do not identify suspects until they are charged in court. According to police spokesperson Katelgo Mogale, they opened a case on a murder of a 30-year-old lady in the outskirts of the capital and a that a 9mm bullet was seen nearby. A suspect aged 26 years has been taken to custody, they said.
Meanwhile, radio reports said that the incident could have been an accident and that the suspect could have shot her by mistake.
South Africa has a history of the highest rate of violent crimes and home owners are known to keep weapons for their safety, which most of the time ends up in accidents .

Perhaps what underscores this tragedy is how on one hand Pistorius’ energy and determination to excel in sports had an unseen abrupt underbelly which included a violent temperament and what now appears a bad attitude towards women in general…something that one never expects to see in a national hero.
